Exciting Developments!

I had gone to the inworld Career Fair in hopes of landing a job inworld or in RL (real life). I was given links for applying and saw that the majority of them were for RL locations where I don’t live near. I had come to the conclusion that I would need a job in SL as a recruiter for one of the companies, with Verizon being the best candidate! So far I haven’t heard anything from them, in spite of the few interviews I was asked by them to do. I haven’t given up hope though!
In SL I met the COO (Brian Regan or PrinterBrian Dowd) of a company called Semper, which is a RL company that’s been around about 12 yrs. and has a dozen offices throughout the US.
” The company’s name was derived from the Latin root, semper: always. For us, Semper literally means always being there for our clients.

They are a hiring company for printers. They offered me freelance work and I have done a couple of things for them already. I tweaked the company logo for their blog and designed 2 postcards for them to mail out advertizing their services. I was paid quickly through Paypal for the logo work and am waiting for a check in the mail for the postcard designs!

Here are urls for their company site and their blog:

I am now looking at going through some professional prepress training because they would like to use me on other stuff so its cool if I learn, it makes me more effective for them. It may take awhile for me to learn what I need to but it will be well worth the efforts!

On a Relevant Side Note, About Metaverse and Employment:

Social networks can work, they just take effort, many people dont get it!

To understand SL from a b2b standpoint, to understand me picking up work using the social network side, have a look at this site – MPK20: Sun’s Virtual Workplace

I Am Also Doing Graphic Work Inworld for Dez Publishing and their new e-magazine called Hodge Podge. I designed logos for both and am waiting for them to choose from my many entries!

Hodge Podge emagazine

I’m Also a Mentor in SL, someone who is learning how to help newcomers. The articles in Hodge Podge for new people tie in with my responsibilities there. A helpful network of ideas for helping others!

Often times things happen within SL that just make a person go, “wtf?!?”

Here are some pictures of such moments, with appropriate comments describing the situations.

1. My avatar was locked into a sitting position from having been on a flying disc before teleporting, in spite of the fact that I clearly remember ‘standing’ just before tp’ing! Here I had sat on a disc and then chose ‘stand’ again to attempt to get unstuck, but this is the result -

Standing?

2. This is what happened when I chose to ‘sit’ on the pad -

Sit?

New Link

I have an account in Flickr and recently updated it with more SL snaps so am posting the link to it here and it will be added to the list –

13:06 Interviewing at the Virtual World Job Fair
You don’t have to worry about sweaty palms or bad breath. But you do have to think about whether your avatar — a digital representative of yourself — knows how to walk, talk, and act appropriately. It’s a new experiment in job hunting: interviews for real-world jobs, conducted online in a 3D virtual world.

Sodexho

This is the building where Sodexho, a Gaithersburg hospitality company, held their interviews. I was very impressed with their multi-representative organized approach for handling each person who showed up, also they had excellant media presentations and a well-rounded tour of their company aspects.

Verizon had many representatives recruiting at the Career Fair. They were organized, friendly and very upbeat!

Even though I discovered eBay’s building after interview hours, one of their friendly representatives dropped in to welcome myself and others. She answered questions and was helpful.

Ebay Building

An interesting thing happened just before I found eBay’s building – I mentioned to someone in passing that the Career Fair was about interviews for real jobs, which surprised this lady and so she went with me to find out more. She was under the impression that it was about inworld jobs only so she wasn’t interested until then. She commented that it was a good thing she listened!

Interview from The Baltimore Sun

The next day I returned to take snapshots of the buildings for use in this blog. When I was there I saw activity in the main building by the host company. They were having their own interview with members of the press from The Baltimore Sun and quietly invited me to sit in and observe.

Welsh Harbor

Today I was wandering around a place in SL called Welsh Harbor that a friend invited me to another day and I discovered a couple who were working on a large castle-ish building. I looked at their profiles and saw that they live in Wales. I added one of them to my friends list so we could keep in touch and hope to meet with them again soon.

Also, they have many items for sale on SL Exchange. Here is one that I found most interesting:

“Beze – Ship
To view the ship come to Wales, it’s in the cave.
Ship comes in 10 pieces, but will load as one when you take it out of your inventory, so keep your edit window open so you can move it.
The ship is 866 prims. It comes copy and modify in case anything gets damaged or you want to change and add things.
There are also copiable barrels, crates and cannons in the box.”

Cool Avatars

In just a weekend or so of hanging out in various places including the large Welcome Area of Ahern and the other 3 sims combined, I saw an interesting variety of avatars which compelled me to take pictures of some of them and upload for everyone’s enjoyment! There are so many creative people who make it worth our time!!

The other day Lestat and I both happened to be eating soup at the same time, which could be unusual in itself since he lives in Australia and I live in the United States! On this particular day I suggested that we have soup in our castle and appear to dine in a civilized fashion together.
Our dining experience went along nicely at first even though the only soup I could find in my inventory was something from Halloween with eyeballs floating in it! Lestat commented that there was nothing like having soup that stared back at you! Haha! We sat down to have the soup and I realized that we needed spoons so I found some and gave one to Lestat…next thing we knew he was sitting above the table on his bowl of soup!

Sitting in soup

I went to ‘wear’ the spoon that was in my inventory and likewise found my own avatar sitting on top of my soup!!! :S
Silly guy asked me if I needed a straw!

My turn to sit in soup!

After we composed ourselves from much laughter and managed to sit back on our chairs, I gave Lestat and myself each a plate of bacon, eggs, toast and orange slices, along with a fork apiece. When we tried to put our plates on the table they went UNDER it! Nice abilities of panning cameras to locate and then of levitating objects came in handy to move them where we wanted them!
Lestat dared ask if there was to be any dessert, adding this comment, “unless it’s likely to kill us?”, so I hunted in my inventory to find something suitable for the occasion. There were huge cake slices about the size of computer towers along with flat gingerbread cookies with flat glasses of milk and platters full of flat chocolate chip cookies! (They looked exceedingly flat next to the tall cake, 3d breakfast food and bowls of soup.)

Will the deserts do us in?

As we settled down to enjoy our desserts and conversation, our zero primmer kicked in causing our castle walls, ceilings and floors to disappear and leave us dining momentarily mid-air (700m above our small island)!

Castle disappears and we dine midair!
